Toronto Caulking
As duct tape is to a carpenter, so too is caulking to a Toronto roofer. And at The Cutting Edge Roofing, we’re not talking just any kind of caulk. We use special
roofer’s caulk to plug holes, seal roofing components and stop and roofing water leaks right at the source.
Both residential and commercial roofs take a beating in Toronto, particularly during the winter months. Heavy snow, ice build-ups, torrential rains, and high winds not only loosen shingles but also take a heavy toll on other roof components. If we are looking for a Toronto roof leak, here are some areas we focus on first. They are:
- Angles on rooftops
- Gutters
- Chimneys
- Seals around flashing and vents
- Skylights
However, understand that anywhere there is a seam or hole in the roof’s surface is a potential site for a leak!
Where The Cutting Edge Checks for Leaks
Our 20 years in the roofing business has taught us not only how to find the most miniscule of roof leaks, but how to fix them correctly.
Rooftop Angles.Roofs generally have several peaks and valleys. The biggest one is usually at the very top of the roofline. If your home was built with several attached wings or dormers, there are more opportunities for leaks. Places where two pieces of roofing abut create a perfect opportunity for a leak. We seal these seams to prevent water infiltration.
Gutters. Water draining from the roof into gutters and downspouts is normally channeled away from the house to the ground. When gutters and downspouts are clogged by leaves, twigs, or animal droppings, the water backs up and overflows. A lot of that water cascades over the gutter's edge, splashes against the soffit and fascia under the eaves and runs down the walls. That’s why it’s important to have The Cutting Edge Roofing clean your gutters at least once a year. This can prevent repairs and replacements later on!
Chimneys. Chimneys have metal flashings around the base connecting with the shingles. We check for gaps in the metal and seal them with a good grade of caulking.
Flashings and vents. Aluminum flashing and rubber boots prevent water from leaking through holes in the roof where vents, chimneys, and other components enter the house. These sites are sealed with caulking or a rubber gasket-like component to guard against water infiltration. When the caulk or boot deteriorates after exposure to the elements, they are likely to leak.
Skylights. The first thing we examine is the skylight pane itself-is it cracked or damaged? Is the seal around the pane missing sections or is it brittle? Next, are there damaged shingles, or have some of the nails that hold down the skylight worked their way up? Oftentimes we can caulk the metal flashing around the skylight to stop the leaking.
There are minor roof leaks that can be handled with nails, caulking or replacement of shingles and then there’s major roof leaks caused by inadequate attic ventilation, for instance. If your attic is trapping all the moisture from your
kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room, it will eventual transform your attic into swamp which can then warp your roof deck and cause the shingles to buckle and pop out of position.
At The Cutting Edge Roofing, we’ll be honest with you if roof repair or roof replacement is your best option. We’ll find the most cost-effective solution to get your roofing job done right – the first time!
